HONG KONG (SE): Family members and friends of the late Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung thanked him for his contribution to family and Church as they recalled different experiences in his life.
 
Cindy Yang, his sister, remembered her eldest brother’s love for the family. For her, Bishop Yeung was a responsible brother who performed the duty of a father. 
 
In an interview with the Kung Kao Po on January 11, she recalled that the future bishop was five-years-old when the whole family migrated to Hong Kong. 
 
While their father worked overseas most of the time, their mother was a traditional woman focusing on household matters so the young Michael Yeung had to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of his younger siblings in other aspects. 
 
She remembered that it was their eldest brother who told them how to study well, taught them interpersonal skills and gave them tips on good manners. 
 
He was also the family representative on parents’ day and would also scold them when they had poor examination results or needed improvement. She attributed the successes of the family to his leadership.
 
She remembered that the last meal the family had with Bishop Yeung was on December 26, the day before he was admitted to hospital. The bishop insisted that he would pay the bill as a family gathering should not cause any financial burden for the younger family members. 
 
She said his love for the family was reflected in numerous such small gestures.
 
Teresa Lam Yu Lai-ling, former president of Friends of Caritas, told the Kung Kao Po that Bishop Yeung was a good friend and a good leader who respected the dedication of people. 
 
Lam said she had recently been sick as well and it was the bishop who, despite his own illness and busy schedule, encouraged her to uphold her faith amid the sufferings.
 
Lam said she respected Bishop Yeung’s efforts in recent years to establish a Catholic university, as she saw how he recruited people from different backgrounds to help to develop Friends of Caritas and the Caritas Institute of Higher Education. 
 
Lam said she was also touched by how Bishop Yeung, as the spiritual advisor of the Hong Kong chapter of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, led their monthly spiritual formation session with proper guidance and love.
 
After the bishop passed away on January 3, memorial Masses were held in various parishes on the evenings of January 3 and 4. Father Peter Leung Tat-choi, parish priest of Holy Cross Church, Shaukiwan, said during a memorial Mass on January 3, that Bishop Yeung was a dedicated Church leader who bravely faced challenges. 
 
Father Leung told the Kung Kao Po on January 4 that he was grateful for the bishop’s dedication to his duty in the face of illness and his contributions to the Church, particularly his longtime service with Caritas and the Social Communications Office. 
 
Father Leung said Bishop Yeung had a strong character and was also a sincere person who cared about the people around him.
