Teachers urged to work with God’s love

HONG KONG (SE): Over 11,000 educators from more than 200 Catholic schools joined the annual Catholic School Teachers’ Day organised by the Catholic Education Office at the Asia World Expo, Chek Lap Kok, on May 16 under the theme, Let the Children Come to Me!

After an opening prayer led by apostolic administrator, John Cardinal Tong Hon, episcopal delegate for education Peter Lau Chiu-yin, urged teachers to lead students closer to Jesus. He said every student is unique and it is the responsibility of teachers to help them develop their potentials and love their lives.

He called on teachers not to forget the dreams they had when they first joined the profession and encouraged them to journey with their students as they searched for the meaning of life.

During the launching ceremony, Cardinal Tong; permanent secretary for education, Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan; Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing; as well as other guests, placed heart-shaped cards on a banner on the stage, symbolising their encouragement for teachers who enrich students’ lives with love.

Students diplayed their talents through the staging of different performances.

A drama, directed by Sin Chun-tung, associate director of Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, was also performed. The play depicted how a father and teacher told a priest of his experiences of bringing up his son and joining the education profession.

Sin told the Kung Kao Po that he hopes the drama can help people remember to pass on the love of God to children so that they can have the important values in life: faith, hope and love.

Guest speaker, Agnes Meiling Kaneko Chan, regional ambassador of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said she was thankful for the teachers who had inspired her in her childhood. She shared that as she later worked as a volunteer in children’s homes, she realised that every single life is valuable.

She thanked the teachers present for their contributions to the next generation and stressed that education is a means to empower students to fulfill their dreams.

Later, prayers were offered for the Church, Hong Kong, educational practitioners, families and students.

Teachers then pledged to nurture the students entrusted to them with love and to care for their physical, mental and spiritual needs.

Cardinal Tong and Bishop Ha imparted the final blessing.
