New priest for the diocese

HONG KONG (SE): Aloysius Mak-Ying-kin was ordained a priest by the bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon, on June 23, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The rector of Holy Spirit Seminary in Aberdeen, Father Benedict Lam Cho-ming, recommended the deacon to the bishop for ordination and the newly-ordained priest asked the more than 1,200 people present to pray for him in his vocation as a priest and to mirror the value of his service to him to help him to always strive to do better.

He also thanked his fellow seminarians for the support they have given to him and, as an only child, he thanked his parents for instilling the values of Christianity so firmly in him.

He said that the illness of his father back in 1999 gave him great strength and courage to pursue his chosen vocation.

“Ordination is only the first step,” his father, Mak Chuen-yat, said. “I hope that he can be a good instrument of God and lead the flock of the Church well.”

Tang Tin-yau, from Tai Po parish, said that the last ordination of a parishioner was 101 years ago.
