Musical of China missionary saint now online

HONG KONG (UCAN): A video of St. Joseph Freinademetz: The First Saint to Ever Serve in Hong Kong, the musical depicting the history of the first saint to have been based in Hong Kong is now available online with new subtitles in a bid to reach a broader audience and can be watched on YouTube.

The musical is about the life of the Austrian priest (1852 to 1907), a Society of the Divine Word missionary in China who believed that “love is the only language that everyone understands.”

The musical was first performed in April last year with more than 180 actors and support staff (Sunday Examiner, 24 June 2018) and was later recorded by Salt and Light Television in Canada.

Sung in Cantonese, it is subtitled in traditional Chinese characters and English. Other subtitled versions including Japanese, Korean and German are also available on the YouTube channel of St. Joseph Freinademetz the Musical (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSAaIa6lRWIq77UEyGMm82w).

Divine Word Father Joseph Tan Leitao, producer of the musical, said that the arduous task of subtitling was completed thanks to the support of many people.

He expressed particular gratitude for inspiration and assistance from the Austrian consulate in Hong Kong.

The film was awarded an honorable mention in the 2019 Gabriel Awards conducted by the Catholic Press Association of Canada and the United States. It also garnered a Denali Award at the 2019 Alaska International Film Awards as well as being shortlisted in several other international film festivals.

The production team have now recorded the musical’s main theme songs in 20 different languages in keeping with the multilingual skills of St. Joseph Freinademetz himself.
