Man dies in fight with priest

HAILUN (UCAN): A man died after a scuffle involving 46-year-old Father Shang Kanfa, a parish priest in northeastern Hailun City, Heilongjiang province, Harbin diocese, on August 26.
The dead man, named Wang, was the estranged husband of a community leader in the parish, a woman by the name of Gao.
A fight broke out at the Sacred Heart of Jesus church, which is under repair, when it is alleged Wang turned up carrying a screwdriver and looking for his ex-wife.
Eyewitnesses at the church repair site said that Wang appeared to have been drinking and confronted Gao in the parish office, demanding that she return their former home to him. Gao refused and a heated argument broke out.
They said that when Father Shang returned to the office, he tried to intervene in the argument and a fight broke out. Several on-lookers rushed to break up the altercation when it spilled out into the church itself.
Father Shang was pushed to the ground by Wang, but the priest grabbed a construction tool off the floor, got up and lashed out at Wang, hitting him on the head. Wang fell to the ground unconscious.
Eyewitnesses said that Father Shang immediately called the police and drove Wang to a hospital, but he died a short time later.
Local people said that the Church has hired a lawyer to represent Father Shang.
