Salesian set for final profession

HONG KONG (SE): In the Salesian world, August 16 is the birthday of the congregation’s founder, St. John Bosco. On that day this year, at 5:00pm in the parish of Mary Help of Christians (inside Tang King Po School), Carlos Cheung SDB will make his perpetual profession.

The Eucharist will be presided over by the bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon, and the provincial of the Salesians will receive the perpetual vows in the name of the rector major.

Cheung was born in Macau in 1983. His family originates from Hainan province in mainland China. He studied in schools run by the De La Salle Brothers and was baptised at St. Margaret’s parish in Happy Valley during his third year in primary school.

Cheung later became an active member in youth associations, serving as an altar boy, as well as participating in the Focolare Movement.

As a form three student, he joined the Salesian Aspirantate Savio House and upon completing secondary education at Tang King Po School was sent to Escola Dom Luis Versiglia in Macau to begin pre-novitiate formation.

There he was responsible for teaching youngsters and managing the household in the boys’ dormitory.

He finished his novitiate and pronounced his first vows in The Philippines. Returning to Hong Kong, he took a degree in philosophy at the Holy Spirit Seminary College prior to going to Kowloon Tang King Po School to do practical teacher training, while at the same time earning a degree in applied psychology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

He is now in a programme specifically designed for the formation of Salesian priests at the Salesian House of Studies in Shaukeiwan.

Cheung has served in various places as part of his pastoral formation, including the Mass Centre at Salesian English School, the parishes of Holy Family and Mary Help of Christians, as well as the Crisis Centre for Boys Youth Outreach and St. Louis Youth Centre.

He also serves as advisor to the Tridentine Liturgy Community and has composed the Holy Mass Illustrated, as well as playing a role in translating the material posted on the Vatican Teachings on Liturgy by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI website, in addition to the The Roman Missal—Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

As indicated by canon law and the constitutions of the Salesians of Don Bosco, perpetual profession marks a particularly solemn event for the Church and the religious community.

On that day the following members of the Salesian Family will also celebrate their jubilees; diamond jubilee of profession, Father John Baptist Ng, Father John Tsai, Father Lawrence Yao and Father Sylvester Yuan.

Those marking the golden jubilee of their profession are Father Michael Ng, Sister Agatha Cheung and Sister Lucy Kwok; along with silver jubilarians Father Michele Ferrero, Sister Monica Liu.

In addition, Father John Tsai and Father Sylvester Yuan will celebrate their golden jubilees of priesthood.

The Salesian Congregation invites all priests, religious and members of the faithful to take part and witness this great moment of grace. After the liturgy, a tea reception will be offered in the school hall.

On August 15 at 7:30pm, Cheung will hold a youth prayer vigil at the Salesian House of Studies, 18 Chaiwan Road.

All are welcome.
