Year of the Laity gets another 12 months

HONG KONG (SE): Citing the positive experience of the Hong Kong diocese in what has been celebrated as the Year of the Laity, Bishop John Tong Hon announced on September 3 that he is extending the year until the end of December next year.

The bishop said that after what has been the best part of a positive year, he has decided to extend the celebration of the Year of the Laity, “because with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the numbers of conversions in our diocese continue to grow and our faith continues to mature.”

He explained that the remainder of the first year will be devoted to formation and the second will place the stress on the implementation of the commitment of lay people in the basic ecclesial communities.

The Chinese-language Kung Kao Bo reported vicar general, Father Dominic Chan Chi-ming, who is also the president of the preparatory commission for the year, as saying that the programme for 2012 is designed to help people to keep a balance between learning and doing.

Father Chan said that after a year focussed on formation the diocese will now encourage people in participating in the life of the basic ecclesial communities, in an effort to create a network of lay and parish faith formation.

Among the proposals for the coming year are the recitation of the prayer composed for the Year of the Laity and Liturgy of the Hours; regular meditation on the gospel of the day and the word of God; participation in charitable an volunteer work; sharing with the non-Christian people and giving the utmost respect to human rights, starting from the district where you live and expanding to the whole society of Hong Kong.
