Shandong bishop dies after a mixed innings

Jinan (UCAN): Bishop Samuel Guo Chuanzhen, the retired auxiliary from Jinan, Shandong province, died of a heart attack on November 6 at the age of 94.

The Franciscan bishop, who established a major seminary in the area, had lived in seclusion at the Immaculate Conception Church, the former cathedral, after suffering several strokes since the late 1990s.

Zhang Jian, the editor of the diocesan monthly bulletin, Guanghua, said that Bishop Guo and other elderly clerics were models of “fidelity to the Catholic faith despite the difficult years of the Cultural Revolution.”

Bishop Joseph Zhang Xianwang said, “Bishop Guo made great contributions to the Shandong Church.”

Bishop Guo was ordained as the auxiliary bishop in 1988 without a papal mandate, but was later admitted back into communion with Rome.

His funeral was held on November 8 at the Hongjialou Cathedral in his hometown of Jinan.
