Formation for marriage is long term

HONG KONG (SE): “The family and the formation of young people play an important role for the eventual bride and groom who will be living the Christian married life,” John Cardinal Tong Hon told the 46th assembly of the Hong Kong Catholic Marriage Advisory Council on November 26.

The bishop of Hong Kong stressed, “The formation of marriage can be said to begin at birth.” The director of the council said that the diocese will celebrate a Day of Marriage in February next year, to emphasise the value of Christian marriage.

Father Alfred Deignan, a member of the council, added, “Pre-marital formation is not enough; permanent formation is necessary,” since family life and Christian marriage are being threatened on several fronts in today’s society.

Last year, the council dealt with 470 cases of broken marriage and received over 1,000 calls on its hotline. The Catholic Marriage Advisory Council was established in 1965 as a volunteer service jointly funded by the diocese and the government.

Its purpose is to help couples live a happy marriage and support parents in fulfilling their vocation.
