Cardinal Tong turns 80

HONG KONG (SE): John Cardinal Tong Hon, the apostolic administrator and bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, celebrated his 80th birthday on July 31.  The diocese organised a prayer gathering and birthday dinner for him at the Holy Spirit Study Centre on July 29. Over 80 priests of the diocese and representatives from religious institutes joined in the celebrations.

Happy Birthday to a pope of compassion

Pope Francis turns 82 on December 17 and is just three months shy of completing the sixth year of his pontificate. He has strenuously advocated the virtues of mercy and compassion—in fact it has become the slogan of his papacy. His apostolic visit to the Philippines in 2015 was on the theme: Mercy and Compassion.

Hong Kong celebrates pope’s birthday

HONG KONG (SE): “I thank each one of you for your presence, which reflects your appreciation of the important work that Pope Francis is carrying out to unite us all under the cross of Jesus,” the bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon, said in welcoming guests to a gala concert at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to mark the 80th birthday of the pope on December 18.

Pope Benedict turns 89

VATICAN (SE): Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his 89th birthday on April 16. Vatican Radio reported that in his early morning homily, Pope Francis said, “I would like to remind you that today is Pope Benedict’s birthday.”

The pope said, “I have offered the Mass for him and I also invite you to pray for him, so that the Lord may sustain him and give him much joy and happiness.”
