No heresy in showing mercy to divorced and remarried

VATICAN (CNS): “A heresy is a tenacious disagreement with formal dogma. The doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage has not been called into question on Pope Francis’ part,” Walter Cardinal Kasper, a theologian, told Vatican News on March 5.

Embrace the divorced and remarried

PARIS (SE): On the day that Emmanuel Macron was elected as the new president of France, a meeting of a different kind took place in the diocese of Le Havre, far from Paris in the northwest of the country.
 
Bishop Jean-Luc Brunin had sent out invitations to people who have been through the experience of a separation or a divorce, as well as to those who are divorced and remarried to come to a gathering on May 7 for a day of sharing and fellowship.

Two sides of pope’s views on marriage

VATICAN (SE): On his long flight from Azerbaijan to Rome on October 2, Pope Francis spoke at length with reporters during an in-flight press conference about his views on marriage and pastoral care of people in irregular situations.

He has been quite vocal in the past on the necessity of welcoming those who are divorced and remarried, as well as the same sex attracted into the caring fold of the Church, but on the plane he made a quite clear distinction between dogma and pastoral care.

VATICAN (SE): The bishops of Argentina issued a pastoral letter in August this year containing guidelines for priests accompanying the divorced and remarried, including a guarded, but at the same time clear statement of the possibility of readmission to the sacraments in some circumstances.

Pope Francis calls the family an opportunity not a problem

On 4 April 2016, Timothy Cardinal Dolan gave an interview to the French Catholic newspaper, Crux, in which he ventured a guess at what Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia), was going to be about.

He predicted it would be about marriage and not divorce. Now that the document is public, one can easily see that he was right.

Frustration with annulment

HONG KONG (UCAN): Despite finding comfort in the latest apostolic exhortation from Pope Francis, The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia), a divorced and remarried Catholic in Hong Kong said she has lost faith in the Church hierarchy and would not seek its help anymore in resolving the issue of her divorce after two failed attempts.
