Credible leadership serves others pope tells cardinals at consistory

VATICAN CITY (CNS): “None of us must feel ‘superior’ to anyone. None of us should look down at others from above. The only time we can look at a person in this way is when we are helping them to stand up,” Pope Francis told new and old cardinals during a ceremony in which he elevated 14 bishops and archbishops from 11 different nations to the College of Cardinals on June 28.

New cardinals include two from Asia

VATICAN (CNS): Pope Francis announced on May 20 that he would elevate 14 new cardinals—two from Asia—on June 29. He said that coming from 11 nations, the cardinals-elect “express the universality of the Church, which continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all people of the earth.”

Two Asians among new cardinals

VATICAN (SE): Pope Francis named 17 new cardinals at his public angelus address at midday on October 10, including two from Asia.

However, only one is of an age entitling him to vote at a conclave that elects a new pope, Archbishop Patrick D’Rozario, from Dhaka in Bangladesh. The other is the 84-year-old former archbishop of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez.

New cardinals trump Asian bishops

 

VATICAN (SE): The six new cardinals appointed out of season by Pope Benedict XVI during the Synod of Bishops, which concluded in Rome on October 28, have trumped the Asian bishops who were scheduled to gather for their four-yearly meeting in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from November 16 to 25.
