Why Church law forbids violating the seal of confession

VATICAN (CNS): The seal of confession is so important and sacred that a priest would be automatically excommunicated under canon law for directly revealing the contents of a confession.
 
The sacramental seal is absolutely inviolable and “admits no exceptions” even if the intention was to prevent an imminent evil or serious crime, said Monsignor Krzysztof Nykiel, regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican court dealing with matters of conscience.

Australian bishops and religious won’t violate seal of confession

SYDNEY (CNS): “We are committed to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable people while maintaining the seal. We do not see safeguarding and the seal as mutually exclusive,” Australia’s Catholic bishops and religious orders, said on August 31 in response to recommendations from the Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, accepted 98 per cent of its suggestions, but stressed they could not accept recommendations that would violate the seal of confession.

Australian legislation threatens confessional seal

SYDNEY (CNS): “The government threatens religious freedom by appointing itself an expert on religious practices and by attempting to change the sacrament of confession while delivering no improvement in the safety of children,” wrote Archbishop Christopher Prowse of Canberra and Goulburn in The Canberra Times on June 7 in response to the passing of the Ombudsman Amendment Bill 2018 by the Australian Capital Territory’s Legislative Assembly.

Court challenges seal of confession

BATON ROUGE (CWN): In a two-one ruling, an appellate court in the United States of America ruled that a woman whose family is suing the diocese of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and one of its priests, may testify about what she told the priest during confession.
