Praying with each other not against each other

ASSISI (SE): “We have not prayed against one another today, as has unfortunately occurred in history,” Pope Francis said on September 20 in addressing a gathering of world religious leaders at an interfaith prayer for peace in the world at Assisi in Italy.

Looking at the vast diversity of his audience he noted, “Our religious traditions are diverse. But our differences are not the cause of conflict and provocation, or a cold distance between us.”

Praying with Assisi

HONG KONG (SE): On September 30, Pope Francis was to journey to Assisi in Italy to join with leaders of world religions to pray for world peace.

The question that participants were asked to address during the choral prayer at Assisi this year was, “What are the principles acknowledged by all religions for peaceful coexistence? What contribution to politics, science and culture in general can we propose to draft a Decalogue of Human Coexistence?”

Pope talks forgiveness at Assisi

ASSISI (CWN): “The world needs forgiveness,” Pope Francis said during a visit to Assisi on August 4. “Too many people are caught up in resentment and harbour hatred, because they are incapable of forgiving.”

The pope made forgiveness the main theme of his remarks during a personal pilgrimage to mark the 800th anniversary of the Pardon of Assisi, the feast which commemorates the establishment of a plenary indulgence for all who pass through the chapel where the Franciscans were founded.
