Interesting appointments at the Roman Curia

VATICAN (CWNews.com): The Vatican announced a series of key appointments in the Roman Curia on September 21, as Pope Francis began assembling his own Vatican leadership team.

The pope confirmed incumbent prefects of two Vatican congregations in their positions; Archbishop Gerhard Müller, in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; and Fernando Cardinal Filoni, head of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples.

We have a pope!

Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires in Argentina, was elected as the 265th successor to St. Peter on March 13. He has chosen the name Francis and will be known to the world as Pope Francis.

The diocese of Hong Kong warmly welcomes Pope Francis and is asking people to pray for him as the leader of the Catholic Church.

Retired head of Vatican office for migrants dies at 94

VATICAN CITY (CNS): Giovanni Cardinal Cheli, from Italy, longtime Vatican diplomat and retired head of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travellers, died in Rome on February 8 at the age of 94.


He had celebrated the 70th anniversary of his priestly ordination in July 2012, presiding over a Mass in Asti, the northern Italian diocese for which he was ordained in 1942.

Vatican delegation set to visit Syria

 

VATICAN (SE): Pope Benedict XVI is planning to send a seven-member delegation on a special mission to Syria to “express… our encouragement to all those who are involved in the search for an agreement that respects the rights and duties of all with particular attention to what is demanded by humanitarian law.”

Synod highlights dialogue with culture

 

VATICAN (CWNews.com): In its Message to the People of God, the Synod of Bishops has issued a challenge to Catholic people to be part of the new evangelisation.

A summary of its final message, which was approved by the synod on October 24, says what new evangelisation is not. “It is not a question of finding new strategies as if the gospel was to be spread like a market product,” it says.

Vatican champion of world’s media and communications dead at 87
