Two priests in Hebei detained

Hong Kong (UCAN): Father Su Guipeng and Father Zhao He, of the unofficial Church in the diocese of Xuanhua, China, have been detained by authorities in Hebei province, according to a source.
 
The source said Father Zhao, who serves in the Dongcheng Catholic Church, was taken away by the personnel of the United Front Work Department of Yangyuan County on October 24.
 
Seven unidentified people went to the church and said they were taking the priest to talk to local government officials, but he had not returned.

Statue of saint taken down in Hebei

HONG KONG (UCAN): A statue St. John Wu Wenyin, a martyr, was removed from a Catholic church in Hebei province as Chinese authorities continued their clampdown on religious freedom.
 
The statue of St. John Wu Wenyin was unveiled at Dongertou Catholic Church, Yongnian parish, Handan Diocese, on May 3, but a source said that authorities asked the church to remove it after the ceremony “stirring up a commotion on the internet.”

Hebei province tops the baptism ladder

HONG KONG (UCAN): The region of Hebei in China recorded 4,446 baptisms over Easter, the highest number so far reported.

 

Provinces with over 1,000 on record include 1,593 in central Shanxi, 1,327 in southern Guangdong, 1,234 in northwestern Shaanxi, 1,169 in eastern Shandong, 1,168 in eastern Zhejiang and 1,097 in central Henan.
