Shanghai priest appointed to political committee

SHANGHAI (AsiaNews): Father Ignatius Wu Jianlin, a priest at the head of the team that leads the diocese of Shanghai, was recently appointed a member of 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Unusual move for unusual times

SHANGHAI (SE): Deacon today and priest tomorrow was the story for four seminarians from Shanghai on June 6 and 7.
 
Shanghai has been without the services of an active bishop since the newly ordained Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin was placed under house arrest in July 2012.
 
And it has been without a seminary since Sheshan was closed shortly afterwards, relying on the cooperation of neighbouring dioceses and bishops for the formation of its future priests.

Hidden bishop dies 
in Shanghai

SHANGHAI (Agencies): The hidden bishop of Shanghai, who has been under house arrest for the best part of two decades and widely believed to have been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, Bishop Joseph Fan Zhongliang sj, died at the age of 96 in his home at 5.58pm on March 16, the Cardinal Kung Foundation reports.

A Christmas letter to an embattled bishop

 

SHANGHAI (SE): A Catholic person in Shanghai has penned a letter to Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin, who is currently confined to the seminary at Sheshan on the outskirts of the city, stripped of his status as a bishop and suspended from exercising his priestly ministry for two years by government authorities, telling him that he is not alone, but is very much in the prayers of the faithful people of his diocese.
