Hong Kong’s Filipinos pray for peace and unity on independence day

HONG KONG (SE): The Filipino community in Hong Kong gathered at Chater Road, Central, and prayed for peace and unity as they celebrated the country’s 121st Independence Day on June 9, three days ahead of the actual date on June 12.
 
The day’s programme kicked off with an ecumenical prayer service with the leaders of the Catholic, Protestant and Muslim communities praying for good governance, peace and unity in the country.

The Philippines marks Independence Day

MANILA (UCAN): Hundreds of activists marched in the streets of Manila on June 12 to mark the Philippines’ 121st Independence Day from Spain while Church leaders and politicians took the opportunity to talk about freedom.
 
The country’s president, Rodrigo Duterte, called on Filipinos to remember those who “bound their fates, their lives and their fortunes to proclaim the independence of the Filipino people.”

Calls for unity and hope at Philippine Independence Day celebrations

HONG KONG (SE): Filipinos in Hong Kong were reminded to be united as well as to have hope as the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence was celebrated two days early in Chater Road, Central, on June 10.
 
An interfaith prayer service kicked off the day’s events, with leaders of the Filipino Catholic, Protestant and Muslim communities offering prayers for good governance, peace and unity.

A day to be independent

HONG KONG (SE): The Philippine consul general to Hong Kong, Bernardita Catalla, marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of her office in Hong Kong at a diplomatic reception at the Conrad Hotel on June 8 to celebrate 119 years since her homeland declared its independence from Spain in 1898.
 
The Philippines established its first consulate general in the then-British colony in 1957.
