East African bishops issue child protection handbook

NAIROBI (CNS): The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa, known as AMECEA, introduced a handbook titled, Child Safeguarding— Standards and Guidelines: A Catholic Guide for Policy Development, in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 29.
 
The handbook is meant assist Church leaders develop standards to safeguard the safety of children and its release followed a May 28 to 30 child safety seminar attended by bishops, clergy, religious men and women and laypeople working in various ministries.

New child protection law and guidelines for Vatican City State

VATICAN (CNS): Pope Francis established the new norms and legal, criminal and safeguarding procedures for Vatican City State and the Roman Curia with an apostolic letter given motu proprio (on his own initiative), published on March 29. The law and procedures were to go into effect June 1.

Monsignor charged with human trafficking

The recent arrest of a monsignor accused of trafficking a 13-year old minor who was arrested with a child in his car on the way to a motel in Marikina is highly unusual. The parish priest is being charged with a violation of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act.
