Filipino is first Asian to head Dominican Order

BIEN HOA (UCAN): Father Gerard Francisco Timoner, a Filipino priest, was elected Master General of the Order of Preachers (OP), also known as the Dominican Order, during the congregation’s general chapter in Vietnam on July 13. He became the 88th master of the 800-year-old mendicant religious order and the first Asian to hold the post.
 
The 51-year-old priest led the Philippine province of the Dominicans and served as socius, or assistant, for Asia and the Pacific of the outgoing Dominican master, Father Bruno Cadore of France.

New Dominican brothers and novices

Hong Kong (SE): Ten Dominican brothers made their first professions while 16 novices donned the habit of the Dominican Order on Sunday, during the rite of profession and vestition on July 1 at the Chapel of Rosaryhill, Hong Kong, at a Mass concelebrated by Father Javier González Izquierdo, the prior provincial, in the presence of the Dominican Brothers residing in Hong Kong and Macau.
 
A second batch of six novices will make their first professions on August 8.

A charismatic servant returns to the Father

Hong Kong (SE): Dominican Father Everett Allen Roman Carter, a friend of many in Hong Kong, died on the afternoon of June 16 in Avila, Spain. 
 
In accordance with tradition, a requiem Mass was celebrated the next day, June 17 at the priory of the Convent of Santo Tomas, after which he was buried with his confrérès in the cemetery at Avila.

New Dominican prior provincial

HONG KONG (SE): Father Bonifacio García Solís was elected prior provincial for the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary by the capitular friars of the Dominican Order at a gathering at the Convent of St. Thomas Aquinas in Avila, Spain. The election was confirmed by the master of the order, Father Bruno Cadoré.
 
Father Solís succeeds Father Javier Gonzalez Izquierdo, who has concluded his second term.
