Low key bishop dies

HONG KONG (AsiaNews): Bishop Francis Tong Hui, from the northern area of Shaanxi province, died of illness in his sleep on October 27 at the age of 84.

The former bishop of Yan’an, who had been ill for some years, would have celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest on December 23. He was born in Lintong, Shaanxi.

Former Vietnamese boat refugee to head up Australian diocese

VATICAN CITY (CNS): Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen, a former refugee who had fled war-torn Vietnam by boat, has been named by Pope Francis to lead the Diocese of Parramatta in Australia, the Vatican announced on May 5.

The 54-year-old Conventual Franciscan has been working in Australia since 1989 and has been auxiliary bishop of Melbourne since 2011.

Much revered bishop dies in Yujiang

YUJIANG (AsiaNews): A great warrior and much revered person among Catholics in the Nanchang area, Bishop Thomas Zeng Jingmu, the former bishop of Yujiang, passed away on April 2 at the age of 96.

Bishop Zeng (sometimes spelled Deng) had spent more than two decades in prison for his resistance to joining the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association. For his whole life he remained a member of the unofficial, or unregistered, Catholic community and was never recognised by the government as a bishop.

Nepal mourns its first bishop

Kathmandu (UCAN): The first bishop in Nepal, Bishop Anthony Francis Sharma, died on December 8 following a battle with brain cancer.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Nepal reported that he had been undergoing treatment at Neuro Hospital in Kathmandu. He was 78-years-old.

Bishop Sharma oversaw the growth of the Catholic Church through the nation’s recent tumultuous decades.

Appeal to include aged bishop in amnesty

HONG KONG (SE): Catholic people in Hebei province have renewed their appeal for the release of long-imprisoned Bishop James Su Zhimin, from the unofficial Church community in Baoding.

The request came after the president, Xi Jinping, granted amnesty to jailed war veterans, as well as bedridden or disabled elderly prisoners on August 29 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
