The man who said ‘You shall not kill’

He was born the son of poor farm workers in El Salvador. He grew up hungry and deprived, and he was like the millions of poor who don’t know the root causes of their rural poverty. The poor struggle to overcome those sufferings and hardships as they bury the pain within them and strive to forget and survive, and find a better world for themselves and their children.

Request to make St. Oscar Romero a Doctor of the Church

VATICAN  (CNS): Archbishop Jose Luis Escobar Alas of San Salvador, El Salvador, asked Pope Francis to proclaim St. Oscar Romero the first Doctor of the Church from Latin America. 
 
“I wish to take this occasion to implore you, Holy Father, in the name of the shepherds and the people of God, in the most attentive, humble and respectful way, to authorise the opening of the process so that St. Oscar Arnulfo Romero be declared ‘Doctor of the Church,’” Archbishop Escobar said on October 15.

Six new saints as the synod progresses

VATICAN (Agencies): During the 2007 assembly of the conference of Latin American bishops in Aparecida, Brazil, a priest asked Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, what he thought about the slain Bishop Oscar Romero. Bergoglio reportedly said that “to me (Romero) is a saint and a martyr … If I were pope, I would have already canonised him.” Now he is the pope and he will do so on October 14.
