Laos gets its first ever cardinal

BANGKOK (UCAN): The repressed Church in Laos is to have its first ever cardinal. Speaking at the Vatican on May 21, Pope Francis announced that Bishop Louis-Marie Ling Mangkhanekhoun, the apostolic vicar of Pakse, would be elevated to the rank of cardinal at a consistory scheduled for June 28.

The martyrs of Laos

VATICAN (UCAN): “In faith they committed themselves as priests and catechists to serving their brothers and sisters. Through faith, they shared in the sufferings of Christ,” Orlando Cardinal Quevedo said of the 17 people who died in Laos at the hands of Communist guerillas during the revolution of 1953.

Vientiane refuses to host ASEAN meeting

VIENTIANE (AsiaNews): The 10 member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) rotates the host nation for its annual meetings of the Civil Society Organisations and next year’s gathering was set to be held in Laos.

However, citing security risks and inadequate resources as reasons, Vientiane has decided it will not take its turn.

Arrested for spreading the faith

VIENTIANE (SE): Laotian authorities arrested two Christians on September 2 and charged them with a crime they defined as spreading the faith.

Human Rights Watch for Lao Religious Freedom reported that the two are being held at a prison in Khammouane in central Laos.

Landmark Youth Day for Cambodia and Laos

PHNOM PENH (SE): What may be regarded as a run of the mill youth gathering in Hong Kong takes on an entirely different meaning in Cambodia and Laos.

In what is a big breakthrough in countries where any gatherings of more than five people are frowned on by the authorities, more than 100 young people gathered at three different locations in Cambodia under the sponsorship of the Episcopal Conference of Laos and Cambodia from August 10 to 16 to celebrate the first ever Youth Day in either country.
