ROME (SE): “It is a way of life, a way of understanding man based on his transcendence and inalienable dignity, as something more than simply a sum of rights to defend or claims to advance,” Pope Francis said in addressing representatives of all 27 members of the European Union on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome which led to the establishment of the Union on 1 November 1993.

MANCHESTER (CNS): A ruling in the European Court of Justice allowing employers to ban employees from wearing visible religious insignia prompted Bishop Philip Egan, from Portsmouth in England, to comment that it is an infringement of human rights. The European Court had considered two cases. One involves a company banning a Muslim woman from wearing a hijab (headscarf), as internal policy does not allow employees to display any visible signs of political, philosophical or religious beliefs. |

MANCHESTER (CNS): “We cannot accept that people drown and suffocate at the borders of Europe. Building barbed-wire fences and walls to prevent refugees from entering Europe is not a solution,” the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) said in a statement on September 10, a day after meeting in Munich, Germany. A common asylum policy for the European Union (EU) would prevent countries from keeping out migrants, the commission said. |
