Measures to help protect minors are imminent

VATICAN (CNS): While the four-day Vatican summit on the protection of minors has ended, the work to ensure that laws and concrete actions are in place is just beginning, said Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi during a press briefing on February 24.
Father Lombardi, who served as moderator of the February 21 to 24 summit, said Pope Francis will soon publish a new set of laws and guidelines concerning child protection for Vatican City State.

Concerted effort needed to uproot sexual abuse

The Vatican summit addressing The Protection of Minors in the Church brought together the presidents of bishops’ conferences, the heads of the Eastern Catholic Churches, superiors of men’s and women’s religious orders and Roman Curia officials. They heard harrowing testimony from victims and sought to hammer out pastoral directions to prevent sexual abuse of children in the Church by taking responsibility, establishing reporting mechanisms and ensuring transparency.
