Nine Holy Doors open in Taiyuan

TAIYUAN (AsiaNews): “Catholics in the Diocese of Taiyuan hope to undergo conversion during the Jubilee of Mercy, starting with caring for their parents and grandparents, then their neighbours and the needy, guided by the light of holy martyrs of our diocese,” local Bishop Meng Ningyou in Shanxi province said in December at the beginning of the Jubilee of Mercy.

Holy Doors opened at four more Hong Kong churches

Hong Kong (SE): Around 1,600 people packed into St. Teresa’s Church, Kowloon, as Auxiliary Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung opened the Holy Door at 3.00pm on January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, followed by a bi-lingual Mass concelebrated with the priests of the parish.

Ecological conversion and mercy

During the Jubilee of Mercy, seven churches have been designated in Hong Kong as places of pilgrimage where people can prepare themselves to receive God’s mercy.

In a document declaring the Jubilee, entitled The Face of Mercy, Pope Francis stresses that the Church should care for the welfare of the underprivileged and future generations.

A passport to mercy

MANILA (Agencies): With inauguration of the Jubilee of Mercy, the archdiocese of Manila is pushing people to put a new twist to their pilgrimages to the designated churches for the year.

The diocese plans to issue passports, which will contain a guide to and a brief history of the various churches, as well as information on parish activities that are connected with the pilgrimage year.

Several bishops have addressed the subject in pastoral letters to their people and in individual communities there has been an up in the number of pilgrimages and prayer gatherings to reflect on the reality of the way mercy is practiced among their numbers.

Pope proclaims Jubilee of Mercy in Africa

BANGUI (SE): Pope Francis jumped the gun in opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy, when he opened the Holy Door of the cathedral in the capital city of the Central African Republic, Bangui, on November 29, ten days before the official opening scheduled for December 8 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Pope Francis spoke to the people of the war-torn nation about the Christian vocation to love our enemies, saying that it protects us from the temptation to seek revenge and from the spiral of retaliation.

Jubilee Year of Mercy begins on December 8

HONG KONG (SE): In preparation for the Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy, which will be launched in Hong Kong on December 8, the preparation committee gave a series of briefings between October 30 and November 1 on the objectives and the make up of the planned activities for the coming year.

The year was described as being a time to consciously make an extra effort to live out the meaning of mercy in action.
