Islamic State ups the terror ante in Xinjiang

HONG KONG (UCAN): In response to a video released by the Islamic State vowing to spill blood in China, Beijing has pledged to fight terrorist forces alongside the international community. The 30-minute video shows a guerilla-like figure, suspected of being a Uyghur from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in western China, claiming that he would go back to China and commit a terrorist attack. The video also features images of Xinjiang and Chinese police patrolling the streets. |

Islamic State worries Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (UCAN): Malaysia’s battle against the spread of the influence of Islamic State ideology has revealed that despite a high-profile crackdown, new recruits are plentiful. On the weekend of May 21 and 22, police detained 14 more individuals believed to be linked to the group that calls itself the Islamic State. The new arrests came after 15 people, who police say planned to launch attacks in Malaysia, were arrested in March. |

Oldest monastery in Iraq destroyed

HONG KONG (SE): Satellite pictures obtained by The Associated Press on January 20 have confirmed that the Islamic State has destroyed the ruins Iraq’s oldest monastery, built in the sixth century. The destruction of Dair Mar Elia (St. Elijah’s Monastery) in Mosul in all probability took place in the late summer of 2014. |
