Music to celebrate 130th anniversary of the cathedral

HONG KONG (SE): A thanksgiving concert was held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Caine Road, on October 14 to celebrate its 130th anniversary.
 
A number of Catholic musicians, the Cathedral Joint Choirs, the Good Hope School Choir as well as the Chummy Choir were invited to perform that day.
 
Under the leadership of musical director, Viola Yuen Wing-ling, the concert featured performances on instruments such as the trumpet, violin, cello, pipe organ, hand bells and harp.

By way of music…

A new tool is in our midst. A tool that facilitates evangelisation. What I am referring to here is a new songbook, a collection of songs from four of the Catholic youth bands that are active in our diocese, each one of them with its own way of bringing the joy of the cospel to the people around the city and beyond.

Localising Church music in China

HONG KONG (UCAN): China has experienced an increase in locally composed liturgical songs, which is evidenced by a new website listing various hymns that are sung across China today.

Last year, one priest released his own album of songs that he composed himself.

Sanyuan, in northwestern Shaanxi province, and Xianxian in northern Hebei, both held sacred music festivals in late 2016 attracting many choirs from the areas.

HONG KONG (SE): Well known for his persistent support of the downtrodden in Hong Kong, Father Franco Mella showed another side of his persona with a recital of songs of his own composition at the Ngau Chi Civic Centre on the evening of December 26.
