Ordaining older married men should be discussed

VATICAN CITY (CNS): The idea of exceptionally ordaining older married men of proven virtue to celebrate the Eucharist in isolated Catholic communities is something that should be discussed, said Beniamino Cardinal Stella, the prefect of the Congregation for Clergy.

Unusual move for unusual times

SHANGHAI (SE): Deacon today and priest tomorrow was the story for four seminarians from Shanghai on June 6 and 7.
 
Shanghai has been without the services of an active bishop since the newly ordained Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin was placed under house arrest in July 2012.
 
And it has been without a seminary since Sheshan was closed shortly afterwards, relying on the cooperation of neighbouring dioceses and bishops for the formation of its future priests.

Mild response from Beijing

VATICAN (AsiaNews): Beijing has responded to a statement from the Vatican on the presence of an illicitly ordained bishop at two ordinations in China on November 30 and December 2, as well as the Congress of Catholic Representatives that was running for three days after Christmas, in what is being described as a surprisingly mild tone.

New bishops in China

HONG KONG (AsiaNews): November 10 has been set as the date for the ordination of Father Peter Ding Lingbin as the new bishop of Changzhi, in Shanxi province, China. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Cathedral of Ss. Peter and Paul.

While the date and place have been set at relatively short notice, Father Ding received his approval for ordination from the Vatican some two years ago.

One winding road to priesthood

HONG KONG (AsiaNews): “The life of a priest has to be interesting. A good priest is someone who puts himself aside and approaches others. To revive vocations, this approach needs to be done with the youth,” Father Ignatius Lo King-ip said on August 20 after being ordained a priest by John Cardinal Tong Hon at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Three new priests for Wenzhou diocese

Wenzhou (AsiaNews): More that 4,000 people attended the ordination of three new priests for the Wenzhou diocese, Zhejiang, on April 30. Reverend Cai Zhengyou, Reverend Lin Yi and Reverend Song Shanxun, were ordained by the former bishop, Bishop Zhu Weifang at an ordination Mass concelebrated with Father Ma Xianshi, the vicar general, and Father Lin Shenli together with at least 35 other priests.

Ordinations in Seoul

SEOUL (SE): The archdiocese of Seoul in South Korea ordained 20 deacons as priests on February 5.

Andrew Cardinal Yeom Soo-jung told Fides that given the large numbers of people expected to attend, the ceremony was held in the hall at Olympic Park.

Seoul ordains around 30 priests on average each year and over the past 20 years, there have always been more than 20.
