Former bishop of Zamboanga dies

MANILA (SE): The former archbishop of Zamboanga, Archbishop Carmelo Morelos, died from an age-related illness on the afternoon of September 17 at the age of 85.

He began his career as a bishop in Butuan in 1967, where he remained for 27 years before being transferred to Zamboanga until his retirement in 2006. Archbishop Morelos was the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of The Philippines from 1991 to 1995.

Don’t destroy the good relations of the past

ZAMBOANGA (SE): An emergency appeal over rising tensions between Christians and Muslims in Jolo, Sulu province, from Father Sebastiano D’Ambra, a long time promoter of interfaith dialogue and peaceful relations among rival religious and ethnic groups, says the good work done by people in the past is being destroyed.

Saudis shot in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA (UCAN): A visiting Muslim cleric and a diplomat from Saudi Arabia were shot and wounded in the southern city of Zamboanga on March 1.

Police identified the victims as Ayed Al-Qarni, an international lecturer and author of Islamic books, and Sheikh Turki Assaegh, the religious attaché at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Manila.
