Priest abducted in Yemen rescued

HONG KONG (SE): Indian Father Tom Uzhunnalil of the Salesians of Don Bosco, who was abducted by Islamic State militants in Yemen on 4 March 2016, was finally freed on September 12 after 18 months in captivity. 

Oman’s state-run news agency ONA, reported that Omani authorities “in coordination with the Yemeni parties” rescued him.

Kidnapped priest believed still alive

NEW DELHI (UCAN): Father Thomas Uzhunnalil, the Indian Salesian who was kidnapped from the compound of a home for senior citizens run by the Missionaries of Charity in Aden, Yemen, on March 4 last year, is believed to still be alive.
 
The minister for foreign affairs and deputy prime minister from Yemen, Abdulmalik Abduljalil Al-Mekhlafi, told his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj, during a visit to New Delhi on July 10 that he believes he is still alive and that his government is continuing its efforts to trace him.

Cholera in Yemen

SANA’A (AsiaNews): A cholera epidemic that has hit Yemen resulting in at least 789 deaths and over 100,000 suspected cases of contagion has added to the woes of a country torn apart by a civil war.
 
Tarik Jasarevic, from the World Health Organisation, said, “There are 101,820 possible cases and 789 deaths reported to date in 19 different provinces.” It is estimated that up to 250,000 people are at risk of being infected within the next six months.

Kidnapped priest alive and well

ADEN (SE): The Indian-born Salesian Father Tom Uzhunnalli, who was kidnapped in Aden, Yemen, during a raid on the compound of the Missionaries of Charity on March 4, is reported to be alive and well.

AsiaNews reported that efforts are underway to secure his release from the Islamic militants who killed four Missionaries of Charity in the raid on a nursing home.

Kidnapped priest still alive

SANAA (AsiaNews): Despite rumours that spread prior to Easter that Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was kidnapped during the bloody attack on the Missionaries of Charity compound in Aden, Yemen, on March 4, was to be crucified on Good Friday and had been tortured, Bishop Paul Hinder believes that he is alive and well.

The apostolic vicar of Southern Arabia said that photographs were not convincing and other reports cannot be substantiated.

Missionaries of Charity shot dead in Yemen

ADEN (SE): Four sisters from the Missionaries of Charity along with at least 10 people from the staff of a facility for the aged and people with special needs in Aden, Yemen, were killed on March 4, when armed and uniformed men burst into their compound.

There are around 80 people living in the compound altogether.
